Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit I/II/III/IV, Silver Spur I/II, and Corniche; Bentley Azure, Eight, Brooklands, Continental R, Continental T, Mulsanne, Mulsanne S, and Mulsanne Turbo
Between 1980 and 2003, Rolls-Royce and Bentley vehicles were defined by a combination of traditional hand-built craftsmanship and gradually modernized engineering, as the brands evolved through changing ownership and market expectations. The Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit I–IV (1980–1998) and Silver Spur I–II were built on the SZ platform with a strong steel monocoque body and the long-standing aluminum 6.75-liter V8 engine, emphasizing smooth ride quality, quiet performance, and extensive hand-finished interiors using wood veneers and fine leather. The Rolls-Royce Corniche, continuing through several updates during this era, remained a highly exclusive luxury coupe and convertible, largely hand-assembled by Mulliner Park Ward with bespoke detailing and the same refined V8 powertrain.
Bentley models of the period increasingly focused on performance while retaining the same fundamental construction. The Bentley Mulsanne, Mulsanne S, and Mulsanne Turbo (1980–1992) used the SZ architecture but introduced turbocharging to the V8 engine, significantly increasing power and establishing Bentley’s modern performance identity. Later models such as the Bentley Eight (1984–1992) offered a slightly more understated design while maintaining traditional craftsmanship, while the Bentley Brooklands (1992–1998) refined the platform with improved suspension and interior luxury.
Bentley’s flagship performance grand tourers, the Continental R (1991–2003) and Continental T (1996–2003), were built with wider bodies, strengthened structures, and high-output turbocharged V8 engines, combining high-speed capability with handcrafted interiors. The Bentley Azure (1995–2003) extended this concept into an open-top grand tourer with coachbuilt construction and extensive luxury appointments. Throughout this period, both marques maintained their hallmark build philosophy: robust engineering, powerful yet smooth V8 engines, and meticulous hand assembly that emphasized luxury materials, durability, and exclusivity.
